Top 20 Hungarian Inventions That Changed the World

(And Why I Might Deserve an Honorary 21st Spot)

Hungary is a small country — smaller than the state of Indiana, with a population that wouldn’t fill a mid-sized American city’s metro area. And yet, open up your laptop, take an aspirin, write with a pen, or watch television tonight, and there’s a decent chance a Hungarian mind is quietly responsible for some part of that experience.

From László Bíró’s ballpoint pen to John von Neumann’s binary code — the invisible backbone of every computer on Earth — to Albert Szent-Györgyi’s discovery of Vitamin C, Hungarians have spent the last century and a half punching wildly above their weight. Some of these names you’ll recognize. Most, you won’t — and that’s exactly the point. Hungarian inventors have a habit of changing the world quietly, from the background, without ever demanding the spotlight.

That habit, it turns out, runs in the culture — and maybe, in my case, in the blood.

My Own “Invention”

I’m not going to pretend I belong on a list with Nobel laureates. But after 30+ years of teaching and more than 7,000 students, I’ve noticed I keep doing one thing, over and over, that I never see named anywhere else: finding the gold nugget.

Every single class I’ve ever taught — no exceptions — has had at least one student who walked in convinced they had nothing particularly special to offer. Quiet ones. Ones who’d been told, directly or indirectly, that they were behind, or slow, or “not a computer person.” And every single time, if you actually pay attention instead of just lecturing at people, there’s a talent sitting right there under the surface — something they’re genuinely great at that they’ve never once been told matters.

My job, as I’ve come to understand it, isn’t just to teach office software or file management. It’s to find that nugget and hold it up where the person can actually see it for the first time. I can’t patent that. I can’t put it on a résumé the way Bíró could point to a pen. But I’ve watched it change the trajectory of a room full of adults more times than I can count — and if Hungary can produce two dozen Nobel laureates and a Rubik’s Cube from eight million people, I figure this qualifies as at least a minor invention of my own.

Her piece isn’t really about business communication or bookkeeping, even though that’s the class. It’s about what she calls the psychology underneath the curriculum — why students self-sabotage, doubt themselves, procrastinate, or shrink from challenges, and how naming those patterns is the first step to breaking them. She writes about confidence as something built rather than born, discipline as self-respect rather than punishment, and growth as something that doesn’t stop at the classroom door.

As she put it: “The right teacher doesn’t just guide you, they elevate you.”

That’s the gold nugget method, described from the student’s side instead of the teacher’s — which is about as close to independent verification as I’m going to get.
